The Avon Lake United Church of Christ is a church that welcomes all people who are seeking a deeper relationship with God, a life patterned on the life of Jesus, an opportunity to make a difference for good in the world.
Our membership includes people who live in Avon Lake and all its surrounding communities; we are made up of singles, couples, families; we welcome persons of any age, color, ability, or sexual orientation. We come from dozens of different religious backgrounds, and we are politically and culturally diverse.
As the oldest church in Avon Lake, established in 1896, we are known as a community church.
How we’re organized:
Congregations in the United Church of Christ are connected to other churches and to a denominational structure, but congregations make all their own decisions. ALUCC has a congregational meeting at least once a year, at which time we decide upon goals, set budgets, and elect leaders.
Our constitution calls for the program planning and business life of the church to be coordinated by lay-run boards, committees, and Church Council.
Our core values:
- We are a church for people who like to think for themselves; we value openness of heart and mind.
- We strive to be a church that reaches out to others (see our mission activities) and that creates close bonds of caring within our community (through programs such as Stephen Ministry, Doorstep Dinners, parish nursing, and many small groups).
- We welcome new people and new ideas; many folks become quite active and involved while they are very new members – or before even officially joining. If you have an idea for ministry and mission which fits within our mission statement, and if we have the resources to support it, chances are, we’ll give it a try! We’re not afraid of change or failure. We are constantly evaluating our programs to see how they can best meet the needs of a rapidly changing world.
- We believe in “the priesthood of all believers,” which is a way of saying that we believe that all baptized Christians have been given gifts and talents to use in the church and community. Each of us has a ministry. We would love to help match your interests with an avenue of service!
If you think this church might be the right place for you, the best way to find out is to give it a try. Come to worship, sign up to receive our weekly emails, watch our Facebook page, participate in a small group or one-time activity. We won’t put any pressure on you, but our staff will be happy to meet with you and answer your questions.
